Gems of Pedagogy is a year-long community of practice for community college faculty in the Puget Sound area. Participants meet monthly to experience an entirely self-constructed deep exploration of pedagogy. Gems offers a year-long study of the deepest realms of pedagogy-- what we all have in common as leaders of a learning community, no matter the discipline. We will explore the deep ideas of teaching in a series of seven two-hour experiences over the course of an academic year. We will use slides, videotaped conversations, and newly developed exercises to build understandings of the dimensions of classroom leadership and the possibilities present in our personal interactions with students.
Gems promises a transformative experience to its participants. Each month adds another dimension.
October 2011: Module 1-- A Focus on People
November 2011: Module 2-- Co-Construction of Understanding [Essential 1]
January 2012: Module 3-- Representing to Learn [Essential 2]
February 2012: Module 4-- Personal Authenticity
March 2012: Module 5-- Structures of Openness
April 2012: Module 6-- Care
May 2012: Module 7: Documentation and Metacognition [Essential 3]
We are meeting the second Thursday of each month (except December) at North Seattle Community College in Seattle, Washington. NSCC faculty Bradley Lane and Kalyn Owens are this year's series facilitators. Currently, enrollment for the 2011-2012 series is full, so new participants should look forward to next year's call for applications in the Spring of 2012.
